Playing “Vanguard Princess” on Debian Wheezy

One quick note: I apologize if this tutorial has led to any difficulties. This is a very fun game; and I would like to try my best in showing others how to play it on their Debian Linux. So I’ve made some adjustments to the tutorial.

###
# This will create the WINEPREFIX vanpri for Vanguard Princess
# 1.08jp.
##

mkdir ~/.wineprefix
env WINEPREFIX=~/.wineprefix/.vanpri winecfg

###
# This will install libasound2-plugins and Japanese locales. Select
# ja_JP.EUC-JP and ja_JP.UTF-8 under the Configuring Locales menu.
# Press Spacebar to select each one; and Press Enter when finished.
# Set the original locale as default or None.
##

sudo apt-get install libasound2-plugins:i386
sudo apt-get install locales-all
sudo apt-get install locales im-config
sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales

###
# This will change the directory to the location of the downloaded
# executable ‘vanpri108.exe’ and install Vanguard Princess
# Extract the files to c:\vanpri\ when prompted.
##

cd ~/downloads
env WINEPREFIX=~/.wineprefix/.vanpri wine vanpri108.exe

###
# This will change directory to the install directory
# folder and execute Vanguard Princess.
##

cd ~/.wineprefix/.vanpri/drive_c/vanpri/vanpri108/ヴァンガードプリンセス/
env WINEPREFIX=~/.wineprefix/.vanpri LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8 wine ヴァンガードプリンセス.exe

Making the Vanguard Princess launch process a bit easier, I’ve also created a bash shell script vanpri.sh; its contents are the following:

#!/bin/bash
cd ~/.wineprefix/.vanpri/drive_c/vanpri/vanpri108/ヴァンガードプリンセス/
env WINEPREFIX="/home/wilton/.wineprefix/.vanpri" LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8 wine ヴァンガードプリンセス.exe
exit 0
